72The owner or manager of a business, especially in a small business setting where this is often the same person, has to have a lot of things on their mind.They must know their business inside out of course, while also using good management skills to keep things running smoothly.
This business management skill set is as or more important than any other aspect of the knowledge required to successfully run a business. Read on for some simple management tips to assist you in running your business.
Set rules and stick by them, but be willing to bend the rules at times for the sake of fairness and common sense. Figure out what you expect of your employees, then put this down in writing as rules for the behavior and Job performance of your staff. These rules should be posted somewhere in the office as well as given to each new employee as they are hired on.
Know the ins and outs of all of your IT and communications equipment. Understand the technology you use; this will help you to train your staff to use it effectively.
Investigate your options for a corporate long distance plan if this is something that will be needed by your business. Make sure that all of your staff are well versed in the use of all of your computer and telephone systems - this will save everyone in your company valuable time.
Don't micromanage your employees; this will make them feel stifled and less likely to innovate on the job. As long as your employees can get things done, let them go about it in the way that works best for them. If you don't sweat the small stuff, great strides can sometimes be made. You will also find that this makes for better employee morale.
Don't forget to delegate tasks to others. A lot of small business owners especially have a hard time relinquishing work they see as of great importance to others.
Don't make this mistake however; your employees will relish the opportunity to get varied work to do and you will gain in two ways. Firstly, you will free up some time for yourself to focus on other duties.
Secondly, your employees will learn different aspects of managing the business, letting you have a little more peace of mind about the smooth operations of your business while you are on vacation - you would like to go on vacation at some point, wouldn't you?
Make job descriptions clear to your employees. Each member of your staff needs to understand what exactly is and is not part of their job. Make these job descriptions specific and update them as circumstances warrant.
If people know what is expected of them it will be far better for everyone in your firm and you won't have the problem of some duties falling through the cracks.
Keep in communication with your entire staff. Your employees are ill served by being kept in the dark about developments. Use memos, newsletters and meetings. Morale will be greatly improved when employees know they are in the loop on things.
Emphasize the importance of customer service to your employees. Without customers, you wouldn't have a business; something often forgotten in the day to day operations of a business.
The occasional seminar on customer service would be a good idea. Just make sure that customer service is something which remains a top priority for your staff.
