Voice over IP - High Speed Communication

One of the latest introductions that has been making its way through the telecommunication world is Voice Over Internet Protocol or VOIP. It is a technology that has rapidly found it's way into many homes.

There is significant savings when it comes to long distance phone calls and in some cases you can have unlimited calling for a flat rate fee per month. VOIP can do this by combining its technology with high speed internet.

Traditional phone service routes your calls through your local phone service provider, then to your long distance provider network, then to the receiving local phone network and then to the line attached to the number you dialed. Each network has it's own fees attached that have to be paid for the use of their lines. This is passed on you in terms of the minute charges and additional usage fees.

By using the internet as the network to route the phone call you can have a long distance call cost the same as a local call. How is this possible? Using VOIP means that your analog phone signal is transferred into a digital signal and sent the same way you send data via the web. It is then reestablished as an analog signal once it reaches the other end.

It is so much faster and maintains signal quality that even long distance providers are starting to switch to using this method in order to transfer phone calls along their network.

This lowers their over all cost when it comes to fees but also helps to reduce maintenance costs since hardwired connections are less frequently used.

Dial up service does not work well for VOIP so in order to make use of its full capabilities you need to have high speed internet. Dial up service can be used but expect delays and expect frequent call drops. This makes using dial up service for VOIP highly unreliable.

When considering the costs of regular long distance and VOIP you will find that normally VOIP is a per month flat rate fee that allows you to call as many people as you want and talk as long as you want. Often times this fee is less than the standard usage fee before per minute costs that you pay for your regular long distance service.

High speed internet can be obtained from local phone providers or cable providers making it highly affordable and even with the additional expense of having high speed internet you will most likely see a significant savings when it comes to your monthly phone bill.

Since high speed internet is available in most areas either through the phone company or through the cable company you can easily obtain this service. You do not need special equipment in order to be able to use VOIP service. It works well with standard analog phone equipment.
