MPLS operates on an Open System Interconnection (OSI) Model Layer which is composed of 7 layers. When transmitted each of the controls have to go through each layer. The data is normally sent through all of the 7 layers and back as they are sent and received.

However, with the MPLS network in place along with its special labeling system, each packet is labeled using a Label Edge Router which would include all important information. In the MPLS network, every single piece of data in the information packet has the capability to skip out on some layers, thus creating a more efficient delivery system.
